DIY Lip Balm Recipe with Coconut Oil

Every fall I make a big batch of wonderful homemade honey lip balm to use as Christmas gifts, and to have on hand for myself for the year! This year, I decided to share my simple DIY lip balm recipe so you can make some too!

Free of harmful chemicals, this lip balm recipe is made with coconut oil, beeswax and raw honey to naturally nourish and moisturize your lips!

 

 

You can either use lip balm tubes or tins (you can find both on Amazon)! For gifts I use regular blank address labels to print or hand write a cute label, and simply wrap them around the tubes.

DIY Lip Balm Recipe

Makes approximately 14 lip balm tubes.

 

• 1/4 cup coconut oil (you can use raw or regular expeller-pressed coconut oil; use expeller-pressed (not raw) if you don’t want a noticeable coconut scent and flavor )
• 1 heaping T beeswax chunks
• 2 tsp raw honey
• 1/4 tsp vitamin E oil
• 15 drops essential oil (optional)

 

 

Instructions: Melt approximately 1/4 cup coconut oil in a small pan over low heat. When the oil is mostly melted, pour into a measuring cup and add more if needed to make 1/4 cup. Return oil to stove, add beeswax and continue to melt on low.

When the wax is melted, remove the pan from stove and add honey, vitamin E and optional essential oils (try peppermint, citrus or lavender oils!).

Let cool slightly and give it another stir. The honey will not fully blend with the oil and wax while the lip balm is hot.

You can test the firmness of your lip balm by dipping a spoon in it and placing the spoon in the freezer for a few minutes until it is set.

If the lip balm is too firm, add a small amount of coconut oil. If it is too soft, add a tiny bit of beeswax.

 

 

Pouring Lip Balm into Tubes

If you are using tins, follow the instructions for tins below. To pour the lip balm into tubes, I find it easiest to use a small syringe. I have one dedicated just to lip balm making, since it’s pretty hard to get beeswax out of a syringe.

A syringe with a dial is helpful to avoid overflowing the lip balm tubes.

 

 

Remove the caps and stand the empty lip balm tubes upright. Fill each one about 1/3 of the way with the syringe. Filling the tubes only partway at first helps the oil and honey not to separate.

When the lip balm in the tubes has started to thicken, immediately fill them another 1/3 of the way before the lip balm has completely set.

When the second layer is slightly thickened, fill each one all the way to the top.

Immediately use a dry paper towel to wipe out your pot and utensils while they are warm – beeswax does not wash off with water.

Leave the lip balm tubes in an upright position for at least 1 hour till they are firmly set.

Use a dry paper towel to wipe off any drips on the outsides of the tubes, and add caps and labels!

 

 

Putting Lip Balm in Tins

When putting lip balms in tins, you can let it thicken a bit more before pouring, so the oil and honey are blended better.

To hurry it up, place the pot in a shallow dish of ice water and stir until it thickens slightly and lightens in color.

Give it a final stir and immediately scoop the lip balm into tins while it is still soft. Don’t let it completely harden.

Let the tins sit on the counter for at least 2 hours before putting the lids on.
